Jordan Peterson: Carl Jung's Intelligence was "bloody terrifying"

This is interesting, do you think in images or words? I thought everyone thought in words. I think in words and probably do too much thinking, but I'm also good at visualizing. When I studied electronics, maths, and physics I used a lot of visualization to understand the topics.

When I think about MMT I think in words, but I can also see the banks, the off-shore tax havens, and people working and spending their money.

I knew some people weren't good at visualising things, but I never knew that 30% to 50% of people of people think in images and have to translate that into words. It turns out that 30% of Jordan Peterson's audience thought in words, 30% in pictures, and 30% did both. I guess I come in the both category. But thinking primarily in pictures and not using words seems odd to me.

I read loads of Jung when I was young (sorry about the pun). That must mean my intelligence is "bloody terrifying". Or perphas I've missed something....:-)

Carl Jung's theories are ludicrous, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a blithering idiot. They are little more than the wild ravings of someone permanently high on cocaine and heroin, just as Freud's gibberish was similarly chemically induced. Both refused to accept what their poor patients told them (sexual abuse by their family) and twisted their horrific retellings into an all-pervasive sexual perversion of incestuous and murderous desire. What more needs to be said. Jordan Peterson is a goddamn fool, and it says a lot about our intellectual culture that someone like him can become such a huge star. He claims that ancient Chinese artists knew about DNA, that dragons exist, witches also exist and live in swamps, etc.

Like an imbecile, Peterson claims that a certain chemical found in lobsters proves the hierarchical nature of humans. Whether or not humans are hierarchical has absolutely nothing to do with lobsters, and Peterson would have known that had he taken a course in biology. But like most people who pontificate about evolution, Peterson hasn't got a clue. The man is a clown, and so are his groupies who have gotten it into their heads that the man is a genius.

@John:

I agree with you about Freud being mentally ill, but I know little about Jung. Regarding Jordan Peterson, I watched all the videos you provided links to, and Mr. Peterson does seem wacky, but then, we are only seeing short clips. In one video Peterson talks about the double helix being a recurring meme or symbol in various cultures, but I don’t recall Peterson claiming that Australian Aborigines knew about DNA. Regarding his lobster gibberish, Peterson is quite simply in error.

I myself do not care for Peterson. I think he’s a poor speaker. And I didn’t know about Peterson’s apparent wackiness until you pointed it out.

That said, Peterson is famous because he defies the current plague of political correctness, identity politics, and male-bashing. Unfortunately Peterson uses his gadfly status to buttress his Republican-style, quasi-Christian politics (e.g. Peterson claims that climate change is a hoax).

Again, I myself do not care for Peterson. And Freud was depraved. (All men secretly want to kill their fathers and have sex with their mothers? Right. Sure.)

I only came across Jordan Peterson for the first time today and I didn't like him much either. I first saw a video about him on the Dave Rubin report where he was criticizing lefties for their 'mistaken views'. Dave Rubin is annoying too.

By the way, Ralph, when I was young I found Carl Jung to be really interesting too. I was going through a very spiritual phase then and I was attending the Quakers.

Konrad,

I agree about with you about why Peterson has attained god-like status: a lot of what goes by the name of culture and politics is obscene and stupid. In New York city, there are now thirty-one recognised genders. Why thirty-one? Is it based on anything other than whim? What not 31 million? Anyone who argues against this silliness becomes an instant celebrity. The Left has bigger things to deal with than what seems to be a passing fashion, although if we're not careful it make become part of the furniture, so to speak. There seem to be a lot of mentally deficient people around today, and they're attracted to anyone with simple messages, sometimes simple and self-evidently truthful messages like there aren't thirty-one genders. Peterson's garbled message to all the men without a sliver of confidence in their flabby frame in his audience is to embrace your masculinity and, about one hundred hours down the line and a lot of money down the toilet, embrace Jesus, but pretend in the most cowardly fashion to be an atheist! The only decent thing I heard Peterson ever say was read Dostoevsky. I can't argue with that, but then I would add, as a rejoinder, read all the classics.

I could save these sad guru searchers a lot of time and money. What your parents told you is right. You may hate your parents (in which case, grow up), but they were nevertheless right: dress like an adult (ditch the rock n roll t-shirt and the skintight jeans), read like an adult (never stop updating the grey matter in your skull), eat like an adult (and learn how to cook), talk like an adult, learn some manners and humane values, exercise is helpful, ditch the drunken and slobbish existential angst act (it's a poor excuse for wasting your life on alcohol and drugs), etc. All of which is to say, grow up and act like an adult. You'll be surprised how attractive you become to the opposite sex. After all, isn't this what the sad dummies who make up Peterson's audience are basically looking for? Guidance on how to get laid because they're so fucking boring and moronic.

I suppose some women (as it's unlikely that the typical Peterson groupie wants to get it on with the same sex) want what Peterson's selling. Some women are attracted to arrogant cavemen (Peterson would say confident real men) who claim to have read Dostoevsky, but then some women send their underwear to serial killers on death row. Does anyone seriously believe that the kind of sad schmuck who is attracted to Peterson's lame and simpleminded anti-intellectual narratives is going to read many hundreds of pages of classic Russian literature? It's all a con. A con by Peterson, who is now the famous public intellectual he's always wanted to be and found a way to be just that. And a con by the Peterson groupie who thinks the way to get a woman into your sad superhero-themed bed is Jungian psychowhackery and Russian literature. On the whole, women aren't duped by all this stupidity and are naturally repelled by a man who still listens to Metallica. If all you want is to get laid, you'll get all you can handle in any nightclub...

Matt, it is Peterson who has misunderstood something so simple that he is either fantastically stupid or a cynical liar. Biologists would never say anything like what Peterson said. Humans are as different to lobsters as they are to oak trees. Humans and daffodils "share" some thirty-five percent of their genes. What does it mean? Nothing is what it means, other than we are all the product of evolution. We aren't daffodils. We aren't thirty-five percent daffodil. We aren't one percent daffodil. We are exactly zero percent daffodil. Just like we are zero percent chimpanzee even though we share over ninety-eight percent of our genes. Peterson thinks all of this means something, like the fact that we all have some chemical in common with a crustacean. Humans are made out of material that came from a supernova explosion. That's fascinating, but that doesn't mean we're all going to undergo a supernova explosion. Humans are made out of the same stuff as hot dogs and dog shit (protons, electrons and neutrons). What does it mean? It doesn't mean what Peterson thinks it means - but it does mean something far more profound.

Good work crew; sniffing this one out:

“After graduating from Fairview High School in 1979, Peterson entered the Grande Prairie Regional College to study political science and English literature.[5] He later transferred to the University of Alberta, where he completed his B.A. in political science in 1982.[22

“He then returned to the University of Alberta and received a B.A. in psychology in 1984.[”

Yes. It is true that today’s society has emasculated most males in the lower economic classes. This is necessary for the 1% to stay in power. Nonetheless, contrary to some males’ beliefs, being a grown up, or being masculine, does not mean reveling in war, hunting, football, and neoliberalism. It means having discipline, integrity, and empathy.

My suggestion to anyone who is depressed about his life is to look for people who are worse off than you, and see if you can help them in some way. If we claim that, “No one is worse off than me,” then we regress to infantilism. We seal ourselves in an impenetrable cocoon. There are always people worse off than us.

“I suppose some women (as it's unlikely that the typical Peterson groupie wants to get it on with the same sex) want what Peterson's selling. Ha! Years ago I worked as a guard in a state penitentiary. Male guards marveled how some women swooned for inmates. We called this mental disorder “orange fever” after the color of prison inmates’ uniforms. Countless women swooned over Internet photos of heavily tattooed inmate Jeremy Meeks. That’s orange fever.

Regarding women who like Peterson, I propose that they are tired of [1] men who are weak, timid, and withdrawn, and [2] tired of “white knights.” The latter are creeps who champion militant feminism in the futile hope of getting laid, or in the hope of advancing their careers, or in the hope of concealing their perversions. Eric Schneiderman militantly defended militant feminism, but he had to resign as New York Attorney General when he was exposed as a severe abuser of women. Many cops are “white knights.” They eagerly take men to jail after a mere accusation from some woman.

“Does anyone seriously believe that the kind of sad schmuck who is attracted to Peterson's lame and simpleminded anti-intellectual narratives is going to read many hundreds of pages of classic Russian literature? [Dostoevsky.] It's all a con.”~ John

LOL. I don’t watch him. He’s a poor speaker with jumbled ideas.

“On the whole, women aren't duped by all this stupidity and are naturally repelled by a man who still listens to Metallica. If all you want is to get laid, you'll get all you can handle in any nightclub...” ~ John

If we want to get laid, then we must face the reality that we may never get laid, yet not let that stop us from having discipline, integrity, and empathy. True heroes die alone.

Konrad,

It's my Christian upbringing. Matt infuriates me no end, but I like to think that I'm always willing to help a sinner. I'm not unwilling to give him a kicking, but then I don't want this blog to descend into hostility between what looks like an overwhelming silent majority and one person who can't help himself from saying what all decent people consider to be the unsayable, and I do have other things to do with my time than spend it on near-constant moral indignation. I've learned a huge amount from this blog and Matt has written some amazingly informative pieces. For my own part, I'd be unhappy to leave this blog, but if there is one reason to leave it, it is Matt's horrific comments, which absolutely nobody wants to read.

No matter how often the infinitely brilliant Tom Hickey blogs and links to excellent commentary, it only takes a moment of madness from Matt to undo all this. I'm all for free speech, but I would say to Mike, given this blog's wider prominence, he may like to have a word with Matt and ask him to restrict himself to strictly economic and finance related areas. No one is denying him the right to be pro-GOP or pro-Trump or even, Gold help us, pro-war. But it is another thing entirely to be pro-genocide and pro-fascism. Does anyone want MNE to become synonymous with supporting genocide and fascism? It won't be long before that cat is out of the bag. It's Mike blog, not Matt's. If someone doesn't like the standards, they can leave, as I almost certainly will. And if we are LITERALLY for free speech, no matter how obnoxious, then perhaps Mike will allow anyone to put up any kind of obscene stuff. How about, say, Americans being decapitated by ISIS, with a caption saying "FUCKING HILARIOUS!!!!"?

I for one won't put up with much more of this. There are other sites I can read. With the launch of MMT university and the Mitchell-Wray-Watts textbook, the near-unique educational aspect of this blog, from which I have benefited enormously, won't be what it was. I hope when MMT is more mainstream, Mike will be remembered for his bravery (he's taken a beating for the things he's said) and for being a truly great educator. I would, however, prompt Tom, Kaivey and the other progressive and leftist bloggers to think about what they're contributing to. If they stopped blogging on this site, it would soon die a quick death. I was seriously considering asking Mike to allow me to contribute, as I am in overwhelming agreement with the kind of stuff Tom and Kaivey post, but I didn't want to be associated with Matt's deplorable bigotry and genocidal madness. Unfortunately it has come to this. It won't be as much fun reading other sites. There isn't the same energy and the same steely spirit, but you eventually have to decide is it worth it...

John: For my own part, I'd be unhappy to leave this blog, but if there is one reason to leave it, it is Matt's horrific comments, which absolutely nobody wants to read.

John, Matt seems to uncritically swallow and propagate mainstream USA never does bad things etc nonsense. For instance dismisses the enormous and not really disputed evidence that the USA has committed innumerable disgusting crimes in Central and South America and the fact this repulsive criminality has been a leading cause of underdevelopment there, as "a neoliberal conspiracy".

But Konrad has called himself a National Socialist, denies that Hitler and the Nazis murdered millions and started WWII, etc. I don't really see any difference between these two "horrific" instances of unreason, which some might view as "supporting genocide and fascism". They are both things believed only by people who want to believe such things. (Or perhaps a very few people who live in, grew up in a bubble of such people.)

But remember - nobody is without such unreasonable and unreasoning beliefs. Some other people here espouse nonsense, with less of a moral dimension than the above, but if anything crazier, like 911 truthism and the like. The attitude I recommend, but of course cannot always follow, is just patient reminding to be reasonable, to look at and try to discover facts and reason carefully. Not to shoehorn everything into preconceived and very disputable and disputed, even disreputable, beliefs.

I too, would welcome more focus on economics. There is enough work to do there - and it is more interesting really. There are plenty of people who half-learn things (says Mr. 5/8ths :-) ) and end up turning MMT into its opposite, just as Keynesianism eventually became the opposite of everything Keynes ever said.
