I'm counting six "bloggered" links. Backup links are the best workaround. A triple click selects them.

Mouse-over the following links results in link notification of: https://www.blogger.com/#

Have also noticed you cannot paste a link into the comment field but can build your own - I suspect double quotes may paste in as left and right hand quotes (?)

Are you guys using Chrome or Safari?

I'm using Firefox. My backup browser is Pale Moon.

Same result in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Firefox Focus for me. Manually clearing cache doesn't help (I do that automatically in a browser, anyways). Links still pointing on mouse-over to blogger.com this morning, as above. Probably necessary to make sure your cache is clear before testing links Tom? There is a 'Clear Cache' addon for Firefox (with a little broom icon) that allows you to do that with one-click. It's a mystery!

The links are OK when I post them. Blogger changes them later, no idea why.

Is there a MNE site manager who can look into this? Can't find this problem in a blogger forum or general Search.

Perhaps blogger has a particular format for external links? I add target="_blank" rel="noopener" to the 'a href' in Wordpress external links and they work as expected.

The site manager could advise or fix?

Tom Hickey said...

There is no site manager. Blogger is automated and has a simple entry form for links, images, and videos. Nothing about adding anything to the URL. Blogger converts all that to HTML automatically.

jrbarch said...

Ah. Right! Found a little video clip on the process. You can tick a box to open in a new page (target="_blank"). Also a mention to make sure your url begins with http:// or https:// Typing "www.example.com" doesn't work while "http://www.example.com" does. Other than that I too am stumped.

Someone must have configured the settings for the MNE blog? For example, I noticed you can force all external links must open in a new page in the dashboard Template. There has to be a reason the link is bombing out and defaulting back to blogger.com. Either input or settings? Everyone would be complaining if it was blogger. Still a mystery!

I have put links in with the full URL and tested them. Later they don't work. I fix them again and test them and later they are changed again. This happens as I gather links before I post the page. I've posted the page and then checked the links in another browser and they work. Later, they don't. Mystery indeed.

I will try (target="…)

Thanks.

BTW, this never happen before they "upgraded" Blogger.

jrbarch said...

God, what a dog's dinner!

Found this:

To edit a link, click on it and select Change in the blue box that will appear next to the link. This re-opens the Edit Link dialog box so that you can change the destination URL. You can change the link text directly in your draft without opening the Edit Link box.

Might help to see the html code, note any change from original input - and perhaps manually add target="" and rel="" (?)

If it was the upgrade wouldn't there be a hullaballo all over? It certainly looks like blogger - but - I don't know. Am not familiar with blogger settings. Inserting external links is so fundamental - how could they screw that up? Don't ask?

You can edit in html mode behind a post: Working with HTML in Blogger's new (2020) Post-editor

May give you more insight into what's happening to the url... probably have to use the search function to find the correct one among all the page code

Peter Pan said...

The issue hasn't been fixed, therefore it's not a bug, it's a feature.

jrbarch said...

I think a possibility remains that Blogger is simply defaulting back to blogger.com because the internal link is not formatted to its liking? A test could be run:

1. Use FF with Clear Cache addon
2. Login Blogger
3. Create new draft – edit in html
4. Create test url (replace || ... || pairs with < and > )
||a href="https://www.example.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"||Test this link||/a||
Save as draft
5. Logout Blogger - delete cache as a precaution
6. Login Blogger
7. Open draft post – edit as html to check Test this Link hasn’t been altered back to blogger default

jrbarch said...

~internal~ should be external

jrbarch said...

Just to frustrate you even more Tom - I started a blogger blog tbxl (test-blogger-external-links) and added the first three of your failing links.

html looks ok and the links are working? After you've had a look will delete the blog.

Links work fine.
