A new and controversial report arguing for the production of low-yield, tactical nuclear weapons by the U.S. released by a noted D.C. think tank has drawn heavy criticism from field experts, including one of the report’s coauthors, who labeled the report’s conclusions as “reckless” and “insane.”
The report, released by the Center for Strategic and International Studies and entitled Project Atom: A Competitive Strategies Approach to Defining U.S. Nuclear Strategy and Posture for 2025–2050, was produced by nine coauthors from four think tanks but the conclusions drawn were solely that of the CSIS’ Clark Murdock.
“In order to execute its Measured Response strategy, the nuclear forces for both deterrence and extended deterrence should have low-yield, accurate, special-effects options that can respond proportionately at the lower end of the nuclear continuum,” Murdock writes in the report.Feel safer?
“I don’t think that Danes fully understand the consequence if Denmark joins the American-led missile defence shield. If they do, then Danish warships will be targets for Russian nuclear missiles,” said Mikhail Vanin, the Russian ambassador to Denmark, to the Jyllands-Posten newspaper.
“Denmark would be part of the threat against Russia. It would be less peaceful and relations with Russia will suffer. It is, of course, your own decision - I just want to remind you that your finances and security will suffer. At the same time Russia has missiles that certainly can penetrate the future global missile defence system,” Mr Vanin said.
The Russian Defence Ministry on Saturday flatly denied the Ukrainian military chief’s allegations about the use of tactical nuclear weapons at Lugansk’s airport in eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian media earlier in the day quoted Geletei as telling one of the journalists that the Russian army had delivered two tactical nuclear strikes on the Lugansk airport from a self-propelled Tyulpan 2S4 mortar system, thus causing the Ukrainian troops to leave the area.
“The strikes were so powerful that they demolished buildings completely from top to bottom,” media reports quoted him as saying.
