Inae Oh — Donald Trump, Champion of the Working Class, Is Filling His Cabinet With Billionaires

Hey, they are only people that billionaire Trump knows. He calls them "winners" and wants to appoint only "winners." (Compare with "job creators.")

Matt,

I am not disputing you, but however,in that case, the working class stiffs that voted for Trump are in for a rude surprise, as obviously they are nothing but obvious losers in the game that produces nothing but winners and losers.

This complaint is such bullshit.

What were rich WASPs when they ran the country?

Old Money—not New Money, repeat NOT—has a rule for its progeny: You are not to take a job from someone who needs it to survive and feed his family.

It was considered the ultimate déclassée behavior of the Old Money class. Not done. It was considered socially and morally intolerable.

Their progeny were expected to go into public service—women were expected to engage in charitable organizations—where salaries were low-end and basically tokens, not anything they could survive on. They were expected to use their university educations to get the training needed to craft policy and were expected to use it for the public good, not making money taking advantage of their superior access to the system. [One side of my family comes from that world. I know their imperatives well. Their codes. Their rules.]

Well, Jews objected to the white-shoe treatments of Jews in public service circles and the Palm Beach set, and set about changing that exclusion starting in the 60s. That meritocracy has ruled since (see Ron Unz for explanation of meritocracy). And the majority of this meritocracy has never understood the Old Money dictum, or scoffed at it as antiquated, to the detriment of public purpose.

Now the scales are tipping again to another social revolution, which I believe is completely devoid of this mid-20th C religion-based tribal horseshit, at least it will be shown to be. All this hand-wringing about billionaires assumes that these cats have no soul, no feeling for anything but bucking up their bank accounts. Many do. But there are many who don’t. And progressives seem to be on auto these days repeating these old tropes, and declaiming them as characters in their movie of dip and dap: if rich and hold an opposite political view to me, you are X.

Bullshit, Matt. Tired thinking. You are not realizing what Trump is doing. The man is masterful, imo. Fucking masterful.

Look at his appointments. He is throwing a net, a noose, around the congressional powers that could fight his desired changes: The Senate Majority Leader (O’Connell), and the Speaker of the House (Ryan). The two men who are critical to Trump getting things done.

Trump understands he has no domestic power. He knows that his purview is foreign policy, hence, the time and whatever surrounding his choosing a SecState because that guy is going to have to work closely and personally with Trump on a day-to-day basis. Trump is going to farm it out.

But when it comes to Congress, he knows he is at the mercy of the real power in the country: Congress.

So look at these appointments (if I get some wrong, I ain’t gonna google for accuracy):

His Chief-of-Staff. Longtime ally from Wisconsin politics, and a best friend in Congress? Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House.
Health Secretary. Best friend in Congress? Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House.

Transportation Secretary: wife of Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader. Who better to get a comprehensive and expensive infrastructure bill through?

There were two more. I forget the exact connections, but they led back to McConnell or Ryan. I realized this last night in a flash and realized what Trump was doing. Being a billionaire has nothing to do with it. Trump is harnessing their access and networks.

Brilliant, because it’s hidden. Trump, however, will be control.

CORRECTION!

Trump is NOT going to farm it out.

They need someone at state who knows how to do a full body off restoration job .... we don't know what the h we lost out of there and to who.... so that fits with Romney who is known as a restructure/turn around guy.... state has to be ripped apart and put back together ... the right way...

Easier said than done.

And what does a financial barbarian like Romney know about foreign policy? IIRC, the main weakness of the Romney-Ryan ticket was foreign policy.

Anyway, glad to see that Romney and Trump are good buddies again :)

"Here's what I know: Donald Trump is a phoney, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He's playing members of the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House, and all we get is a lousy hat." -- Mitt Romney March 2016
