What is going on? Simply put, the West is getting poorer. We are seeing two things at once. First of all, policymakers have lost the plot and started intervening heavily into the economy with lockdowns and various other policies that destroy the supply-side of the economy. Secondly, we are seeing an enormous geopolitical shift centered around the war in Ukraine. The old model where the rich West runs large trade deficits with the poorer developing countries in exchange for worthless paper is coming to an end. We are exacerbating this transition by engaging in self-destructive sanctions policies that interfere with markets in everything from energy to fertiliser.

In a few words: the West is in decline and our leaders are greatly accelerating and exacerbating this decline. They can cover this up with redundant arguments about what is and isn’t a recession for so long. But at some point either the inflation will get worse — perhaps by gas shortages in Europe this winter — and/or the unmeployment rate will spike. At that point, the underlying dynamics will become too obvious to ignore. For politicians and the general public anyway. Economists will likely find some other redundant nuance to debate and distract.

Maybe "American Diplomacy as a Tragi-Comedy" is a more apt title? American "diplomacy" = "Do as we say or we whack you." But it is not so easy trying to whack China, Russia, and Iran without incurring huge costs.

Drawing out the implications of this article, the US strategy of isolating China and Russia is failing. They are economically dominant in the Global South, especially China. Moreover, the US and Europe are dependent on Chinese exports ("supply chains"). And as we are seeing with sanctions, the US and Europe and also dependent on  Russia for materials and also China to a lesser extent (rare earths).

The bad news is that as this realization sets in, the remaining option to stem the tide of history from moving East is war. The US "deep state" joined at the hip with the UK "deep state"are preparing themselves and their allies for the coming conflict whose to save neoliberal, neo-imperial and neocolonial "globalization" dominated by the global elite.

I just got back from vacation, and was greeted by the United States’ 2022Q2 GDP release which hit the dreaded “two quarters of contraction” status. Some people have decided that this counts as a “technical recession,” although it is unclear where the adjective “technical” comes from.
Since I am catching up with everything, I am unable to do a detailed analysis. If I do anything, I will postpone it until next week. I just want to add yet more words to the “is is a recession?” debate.

My view is straightforward: the NBER declares U.S. recessions, and I am not going to refer to a downturn in U.S. data as a “recession” unless the NBER has declared one. The thing to keep in mind that the declaration can arrive with a considerable lag, so I have no issues with texts arguing that one is currently in progress without the NBER committee declaring anything, so long as that condition is noted....

So last week, the Bank of Japan remained the last bank standing, the rest in the advanced world have largely lost the plot by thinking that raising interest rates significantly will reduce the global inflationary pressures that are being driven by on-going supply disruptions arising from the pandemic, the noncompetitive behaviour of the OPEC oil cartel and the Russian assault on Ukraine. The most recent central bank to buckle is the ECB, which last week raised interest rates by 50 basis point, apparently to fight inflation. But the ECB did it with a twist. On the one hand, the rate hike was very mainstream and based on the same defective reasoning that engulfs mainstream macroeconomics. But on the other hand, they introduced a new version of their government bond-buying programs, which the mainstream would call ‘money printing’ and inflationary. So, contradiction reigns supreme in the Eurozone and that is because of the dysfunctional monetary architecture that the neoliberals put in place in the 1990s. The only way the common currency can survive is if the ECB continues to fund Member State deficits, even if they play the charade that they are doing something different. Hilarious....

The Saker (Andrei Raevsky) is back. Here is his first report in some months. 

He, along with some other dissident military analysts like Col. Douglas Macgregor, Andrei Martyanov, Scott Ritter, Dima (of Military Summary), and Brian Berletic of New Atlas, have been providing an alternative to the conventional narrative that is not found on the conventional media that pushes the narrative while ignoring alternative views. It's good to have his perspective again. While opponents may claim that such views are "pro-Russian," these analysts appear to be striving for fact-based objective analysis. Tear and compare and decide for yourself.

(Former Congresswoman and Lt. Col. in the US Army Reserve Tulsi Gabbard also deserves mention as a critic of the present military policy, although she doesn't provide military analysis like those listed above.)

Michael Roberts — Is China headed for a crash?

China in not headed for a "crash" for the simple reason that the government controls the banking system.

The question in any financial crisis is who is going to assume the losses. In market economies, it is generally "the little people" (h/t Alan Simpson), that is, those that do not count. But ultimately the Chinese government will absorb the losses instead of those now affected, the mortgage holders and bank depositors. And cowboy capitalism will be moderated more. The Chinese government has already been doing this lately, having recognized systemic risk increasing with the current liberalization policy.

The problem arose from too much capitalism, as some of the leadership had been complaining. That is now likely to change in the direction of a more managed economy in which there is less risk allowed.

Michael Roberts sees that as potentially limiting growth but China economy was expanding at a blistering rate and can afford to slow down the pace without significant economic contraction.

While this is not likely to be sorted out overnight, it is not the collapse that Western Cassandras are foreseeing.

This was the idea that if we redirect real income towards capital by boosting profits via real wage suppression and/or corporate tax cuts, as if by magic, corporations will start investing the largesse in productive capital, which stimulates economic growth, and, the benefits ‘trickle down’ to the workers who made the initial sacrifices. The evidence base has never supported the idea yet it still resonates. I read two interesting articles yesterday, which are related even if at first blush they may not appear to be. The first reveals the shocking decline in productive investment by both private and public sectors and the long-term damage that that will have for our capacity to meet the climate challenge. The second shows that the arguments that cutting corporate taxes is good for economic growth is false....

The power troika trumps Biden in West Asia — Pepe Escobar

The Tehran summit uniting Iran-Russia-Turkey was a fascinating affair in more ways than one. Ostensibly about the Astana peace process in Syria, launched in 2017, the summit joint statement duly noted that Iran, Russia and (recently rebranded) Turkiye will continue, “cooperating to eliminate terrorists” in Syria and “won’t accept new facts in Syria in the name of defeating terrorism.”

That’s a wholesale rejection of the “war on terror” exceptionalist unipolarity that once ruled West Asia.

Standing up to the global sheriff

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his own speech, was even more explicit. He stressed “specific steps to promote the intra-Syrian inclusive political dialogue” and most of called a spade a spade: “The western states led by the US are strongly encouraging separatist sentiment in some areas of the country and plundering its natural resources with a view to ultimately pulling the Syrian state apart.”

So there will be “extra steps in our trilateral format” aimed at “stabilizing the situation in those areas” and crucially, “returning control to the legitimate government of Syria.” For better or for worse, the days of imperial plunder will be over....

Speaking for the Global East and South, the troika put neoliberalism, neo-imperialism, and neocolonialism on notice that the world will no longer be run in the interest of "the golden billion." Them's fightin' words, and the fights are already in progress in Syria and Ukraine and likely soon in the South China Sea and Taiwan.

• Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created an energy crisis in Europe and global energy markets will never be the same.
• The new world energy order will be defined by government intervention on a scale not seen in recent memory.
• European governments will have to work hard to avoid excessive government interventions in energy markets that might exacerbate the energy crises

Actually, the increasingly threatening effects of climate change were a more significant wakeup call than war, although historically war has justified increased government intrusion in the economy. Now the world is facing a dual threat, either of which could lead to extinction or at least mass culling of the population and realignment of the ecosystem.

The dual threat implies that the world's leaders are caught in a double-bind trying to address both at once. Climate change requires concerted action, while war places the highest priority on ramping up use of existing energy sources, which are chiefly carbon-based.

Today is Wednesday and as usual I feel as though I can roam a bit freer than usual. Today I have some great music but also my latest views on sustainable urban development and the hot topic in Australia at the moment of whether or not the Australian government should reintroduce mask mandates in certain settings given that Covid is rapidly accelerating and our death rate is now at unacceptably high levels and rising. There is a lot of guff on Twitter etc about the oppression of these sorts of restrictions. But wearing a mask is a simple way to protect oneself and those around us. It is hardly a symbol of authoritarianism and conspiracy to destroy our freedom. I see it as basically a civic responsibility. I am in a very small minority though. As usual. Tomorrow I will get back to economics....

I have been running into comments about “top down” versus “bottom up” inflation analysis over the years, mainly on Twitter. The usual context is a conventional economist arguing that “bottom up inflation analysis is defective” for some reason or another. I have not seen a long form analysis justifying this, rather this was drive by snark. I have seen this more often as people are taking victory laps for inflation forecasting.

Since I am not huge fan of the people making the comments, I cannot offer a strong version of their views. I will instead offer a guess at what they were driving at, and explain why I think inflation analysis should be “bottom up.” (I discuss this in Section 3.3 of Breakeven Inflation Analysis.)...
