Matt, they will try, but it is over. The trust is no longer there and US soft power is a shambles.
BTW, this is not going away. It is the beginning of an interregnum that may last a decade or more. Trump was just a rallying point. If he fades, he will be replaced.
By the time it shakes out in the US, the world will be solidly multipolar, unless the US elite chooses to go to war to prevent it, which is a definite possibility, especially when a country is deeply divided and the elite decides that a war is needed for manufacturing unity around the flag.
The US was never the leader of the free world, just the hegemon of putative free traders.
I wonder how many of the protesters had served in Afghanistan or Iraq, or Syria, or had close family members who have. I am reminded of Siegfried Sassoon's poem:
Fight to a Finish
THE boys came back. Bands played and flags were flying, And Yellow-Pressmen thronged the sunlit street To cheer the soldiers who’d refrained from dying, And hear the music of returning feet. ‘Of all the thrills and ardours War has brought, This moment is the finest.’ (So they thought.)
Snapping their bayonets on to charge the mob, Grim Fusiliers broke ranks with glint of steel, At last the boys had found a cushy job. . . . .
I heard the Yellow-Pressmen grunt and squeal; And with my trusty bombers turned and went To clear those Junkers out of Parliament.
Not saying this is a perfect parallel, but there is a lot there.

This marks the end of America's tenure as the leader of the free world and close of the Post-WWII era. The world just entered new uncharted territory.
