The authors are right in the abstract - just because their arguments are abstract and hypothetical. Growth is all about energy and resources and we are bound to ditch oil, coal and gas while running out of resources. This is physics in contrast to wishful thinking I'm afraid.
Go for broke. Then have the survivors pick up the pieces. This has worked in the past, on smaller scales.
