The following BBC documentary may not be of the best visual quality, but it is nonetheless vital (and riveting) viewing for anyone seeking to understand how Europe was clandestinely “rebuilt” from the ashes of the Second World War in preparation for the Cold War. It represents a small but dense chunk of Europe’s forbidden history.

The film’s findings are particularly pertinent in light of last night’s horrific events in Paris. It documents the brutal lengths to which the allied powers (the U.S., UK and NATO) would go in order to maintain their grip on the power structures of the newly liberated old continent.

The film exhaustively documents how the secret services of the allied victors, led by the OSS (the forerunner to the Central Intelligence Agency), deployed fascist and other far-right groups that had collaborated with Hitler (what they termed “stay-behinds”) to build secret networks of spies and agents to fight against communist or other left-wing movements in Cold-War Europe.

As Vincenzo Vinciguerra, a former member of the neo-fascist group “Ordine Nuevo”, says in the film’s introduction, “Gladio, as it is defined nowadays, forms part of what I have always referred to as ‘parallel structures’. In other words, an invisible army that is not poised for battle against a hypothetical invader but rather one meant to be used internally against what the military have always called the ‘Fifth Column of the USSR.'”….

Saker — A 5th column in the Russian media? Absolutely!

Like during the latest Q&A with President Putin. I don’t know if anybody else noticed this, but this really pissed me off. Check out who got to ask a question from the studio….

• Irina Khakamada: bigtime Nemtsov groupie, professional protester and feminist.
• Alexei Venediktov: editor in Chief of the rabidly anti-Russian “Ekho Moskvy” (Echo of Moscow) Radio Station, aka “Ekho Matsy” (Echo of the Matso) due to its russophobic political line. He is actually a “true believer” in western democracy
• Alexei Kudrin: one of the figureheads of the Atlantic Integrationists, a hardcore market economist, very offended since he was fired (by Medvedev, of all people!).
• Konstantin Remchukov: owner and editor in chief of Nezavisimaya Gazeta who has received the official imprimatur of the Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty.…

These guys represent at most 5% of the Russian people. And yet, they are treated by the state media like some kind of honored guests, as if they were literally all Heroes of Russia, with something important and enlightening to say.…

But nevermind them. The real question is this: who invited them and why?

So yes, there is a 5th column in the Russian media.

This would be like the US inviting Noam Chomsky or Ralph Nader to question President Obama on a widely broadcast national forum.

It would be an extreme oversimplification, and not entirely honest, to characterize all Russian liberals as foreign agents. Some are simply socially liberal people who see in the West a political, economic, social and cultural template for their own society. Needless to say, such a view is a small minority in Russia where traditional values and social/cultural conservatism have been on the rise since the end of the Soviet Union, and especially since Putin came to power. 

However, when one examines key figures and institutions of the liberal establishment in Russia – both in politics and civil society – it becomes clear that some of the most influential are in fact collaborating with foreign powers (especially the US) to undermine the Russian government.

Putin calls this cohort "the fifth column." It was put in place after the fall of the USSR by Western advisers, and it is maintained and funded by Western NGOs.

It's pretty amazing, considering what the reaction would be in Washington or the capitals of Europe where the shoe on the other foot.

Machinations in Russia. Alexei Kudrin is the person to watch.

Alexei Kudrin, the former finance minister (right), started by criticizing Putin and Nabiullina last week for their timing on managing the rouble crisis. For Kudrin’s tweets, click. This week Kudrin has announced through the Financial Times that Putin is obliged to choose between capitulation in eastern Ukraine and capitulation on the home front. 

“As for what the president and government must do now,” Kudrin declared, “the most important factor is the normalisation of Russia’s relations with its business partners, above all in Europe, the US and other countries.” Kudrin claimed to the newspaper that 40% of the rouble depreciation is due to the sanctions war. 

Kudrin announced his candidacy for prime minister in Washington in September of 2011, before he was fired; Putin said at the time that Kudrin had suffered abreakdown. This time Kudrin’s candidacy to run Russia is sponsored from London, as he places himself at the head of what the Kremlin faction of security officials is calling the Fifth Column. The security faction is led by chief of staff Sergei Ivanov; it is represented in public by the Novorussian commander Igor Strelkov. Read more. 

Look back at the table setting — at Friday’s meeting with the oligarchs, Ivanov was in first place on Putin’s right.

Federov may sound extreme, perhaps on the level of conspiracy theory (Socio-Economic History is something of a conspiracy theory site), but he is not alone in the Russian government entertaining this view. Something like this is probably indicative of Putin's view also, based on what he has said recently about the US clandestinely manufacturing color revolutions through clandestine operations and NGOs, and putting Russia in its sights for regime change. Foreign Minister Larov has confirmed the view of the Russian Government that Washington's actual agenda of the Ukraine crisis and sanctions is regime change in Russia, just as are sanction imposed on Iran.
