I can't remember where I read this, but it wasn't that long ago that France went apeshit when it heard that many of its former colonies in Africa wanted to start teaching schoolchildren English as well as French. France blew a fuse when it was informed that one of its former colonies had decided to drop French entirely and teach its schoolchildren English instead.
Imperialism becomes neo-imperialism becomes liberal humanitarianism. Imperialism and its supporters never change. It's the same, but one with a different beat,
