The Merro: Tories to form government with DUP

Peter Robinson was leader of a Democratic Unionist Party until last year.

Theresa May said Jeremy Corbyn was soft on terrorism despite her support for Wannabe Saudi Arabia.

The Metro:

The Democratic Unionist Party is the biggest unionist party in Northern Ireland – that is, it is against Ulster becoming part of the Republic of Ireland.

They’ve effectively just replaced the Ulster Unionists (UUP) – but the two parties are anything but the same.

While the UUP is a relatively harmless centre-right party that has had a long-running relationship with the Tories, the DUP is far more conservative, particularly when it comes to social issues.
Here’s what you need to know about the Northern Irish party that is now within throwing distance of Westminster.

LINKS TO TERRORISM

Disturbingly, the party has strong historical links to Loyalist paramilitary groups – in particular the terrorist group Ulster Resistance, which was founded by people who ended up becoming prominent DUP politicians. The party’s former leader Peter Robinson, for example, was an active member of the terror group.

The group also collaborated with other terror groups, including the Ulster Volunteer Force, to smuggle deadly arms into the UK.

Although the party has since rescinded violence, this may seem a bit of a rich move from a party that attacked Jeremy Corbyn for his alleged links to former Northern Irish terrorists.

While it is true that the DUP is simply the political wing of unionist terrorist groups (in the same way as Sinn Fein is for the IRA), what seems to be missed is that a few years ago David Cameron, the then PM, had to apologise to Parliament that the UK had knowingly, using the armed forces, MI5 and Special Branch, helped unions terrorist groups to assassinate nationalists. All independent observers already knew this, but the evidence was by now so overwhelming that the UK's prime minister had to admit that the UK had been terrorising its own population - but for the very best of reasons of course. So the Conservatives getting into bed with the DUP is nothing new.

The DUP and Sinn Fein are democratically elected politicians from political parties. They may have grown out of military campaigns, but then arguably so did the Liberals and the Conservatives (out of the different factions of the English Civil War).

How many years have to pass before people stop raking over the muck from the past? Anybody much younger than me won't even remember the issues in Ireland, and that's half the electorate.

The muck against JC didn't work, and neither will any thrown against the DUP. Times have moved on.

Neil, I don't disagree, although the muck is in fact true. What else could the unionist and nationalist political parties be, other than the political wings of their respective armed struggles? Almost all political parties in the world have similar histories, so why should be horrified that ours are no different? I was simply stating an unfortunate truth, and one that should be remembered as the simple and causal outgrowth of Irish history. Hopefully this history will be remembered when Corbyn and others are again smeared as terrorist sympathisers, when all they did was reach out at a difficult time to find a peaceful solution. Who's to say that next time round - and that could be in as little as a few months - that the muck might not stick? It didn't this time, but there is no guarantee it won't when we're cognisant of the fact that one small push and Corbyn will be prime minister. Hope does spring eternal!

I get the feeling people are tired of mud slinging.

I did some daft stuff in the 1980s as well. But I grew up and changed as I learned more about how the world actually works.

That's the whole point of the article, because the MSM tried so hard to smear Corbyn as an IRA sympathizer, but it didn't wash because when people saw Corbyn on TV he didn't come across like that. They liked him. This shows the Tories up as the hypocrites they are. They've brought it on themselves.

Bring in Boris, have the people warm up to his antics, and call another election. Problem solved!

Anyhow, I was in two minds about whether to post it because Peter Robinson is not the leader of the DUC anymore. And although the DUC are said to be very right wing, they are not anti gay, just anti gay marriage. Well, lots of people who aren't extreme are anti that. I posted it because of the viscous attacks on Corbyn by the Tories and the MSM. It's backfired on them and that's worthy news.

Oh spot on. Theresa May was terrible but Boris will totally blunder it.

You were the kindergarten bully, stealing their frazzles and fudge? Blimey, what ever happened to frazzles and fudge?!

By the way, what happened to your Guardian profile? Have you been kicked off for writing sense or have you simply become heartily sick of the anti-working class imperialist liberalistas?
