Russia doesn't want Eastern Europe or Cuba back. They'd like them to be non-hostile toward Russia, but Russia doesn't want to be saddled with providing free resources and supporting regimes around the world again. So the purpose of the attack would not be to capture the territory but to push back the United States and destroy US forces that are perceived as a threat to Russia.
