It doesn't matter what the public wants as evidenced by massive increases in military spending, eternal wars, decimation of social services, etc.
Speaking as a Brit, I'm scared stiff of all those Chinese aircraft carriers hovering around just off the British coast - ho ho.
Not to worry, a few dozen hypersonic missiles will take out the entire fleet.
