But this is not so much a revolt against the existing government but diametrically opposite world views held by a divided nation, leading to social dysfunction and political paralysis.

I'd note also, Tom, that American evangelicals (the television kind) are the most hardcore of all. I think that that's because they are very impatient for Armageddon and the Second Coming to occur ;)
