My Russian friends say that Russians overwhelmingly love Putin ... because he was the first one to stand up to the oligarchs unleashed by US NeoCon advisors back post 1998.

They also say you'd have to have grown up there to really understand Russian culture, because it's so foreign to how we think.

By that, we're warned to be dubious to what ANY US academic says about Russia, no matter how much of a specialist they think they are.
