clus·ter bomb - a bomb that releases a number of projectiles on impact to injure or damage personnel and vehicles.

No indication in the video that these were cluster bombs, which are like shrapnel.

Russia has smart bombs as well asGPS guided dumb bombs that function like smart bombs. The guidance system is on the plane rather than on the bomb. The GPS system calculates the path and releases the bombs at the exact moment to hit the target coordinates. The accuracy is supposed to be + or - about 5 meters. I have posed on this previously.

They've come a long way from their fuel-air bombing in Chechnya.

Tom they are not designated "cluster" as a characteristic of their guidance systems.....

You can see in the video a lot of simultaneous small explosions dispersed over a several block area in the 2 neighborhoods that were hit... there is a sound delay due to the distance...

The guidance systems just "get them in the correct neighborhood"...

I did not mean to imply that guidance had anything to do with cluster munitions. Cluster munitions contain shrapel. There is no indication of that in the video.

You are confusing multiple bombs with cluster munitions. They are entirely different things. The video is of release of multiple bombs over an area not the use of cluster munitions.

The title of the video is misleading, perhaps purposely so for propaganda purposes.

And multiple bombs doesn't imply indiscriminate use of dumb bombs either. Guided bombs can also be used in multiples.

That video proves nothing other than that someone drops several bombs on an area.

According to Russia and Syria MoD's, the planes involved were of US manufacture and no Russian planes were in the area at the time.

What is air dropped ordnance made out of? Sta-Puffed Marshmallows?

Its not "several" Tom there are dozens minimum of simultaneous explosions...

Here is a youtube:

somebody is dropping cluster bombs over there... if its Russia on ISIS then pour it on who cares...

Bombs are made of explosives and they destroy by exploding. Cluster munitions are filled with explosives and shrapnel-like submunitions. They can contain a small number of submunitions or a very large number.

The choice of weapon is based on the target. These are entirely different types of weapon. There is no indication in the video that the those bombs were cluster bombs. May have been but the video doesn't show it, and no evidence is presented. Even when evidence is presented the provenance has to be determined to ensure it is not a plant.

Convention on Cluster Munitions

Similarly, the Turkish claim that Russia used a cruise missile to destroy a hospital is as believable as the claim that Russia used a Buk in Ukraine to down MH17 when there is no advantage to be gained by either and a lot of disadvantage. On the other hand, those making the charge stand to gain a lot propaganda-wise. This smells like a disinformation campaign.

Isn't that more of a carpet bombing than a cluster bomb?

Tom Hickey said...

In a sense but not necessarily. Carpet bombing is saturation bombing to soften up an enemy. The US perfected it in WWII. The US would saturation bomb enemy positions for about a month before sending in troops to mop up the area of survivors not willing to surrender.

That video could be just taking out a target with a series of bombs over the area.
