NYPD caught manipulating crime statistics, making bogus arrests and ignoring serious crimes

(h/t Roger Erickson)

Another disturbing picture of the NYPD coming to light.

It's bad enough that we are once again starting to see more police brutality and bogus arrests of OWS protestors, but now a scathing report exposes how the NYPD engaged in a department-wide campaign of manipulation of crime statistics that included the arrest of people for doing nothing, in order to make the crime statistics look good.

For more than two years, Adrian Schoolcraft secretly recorded every roll call at the 81st Precinct in Brooklyn and captured his superiors urging police officers to do two things in order to manipulate the "stats" that the department is under pressure to produce: Officers were told to arrest people who were doing little more than standing on the street, but they were also encouraged to disregard actual victims of serious crimes who wanted to file reports.

Welcome to the Fascist States of America!

You may remember the show on HBO called The Wire. NY has become the new Baltimore.

Not much different than a CEO of a Public Company trying to make his quarterly performance look good. When short term results are valued, this is what will happen. Precisely the same thing that Bill Black talks about in the banking sector - FRAUD -- Same thing is now happening with school teachers and school administrators. Manipulate results to look good.

What? CEO's shopping for "metrics" that make them look good?

We all know about the vast improvement in product support when it got shipped it overseas! Look at the numbers! Numbers don't lie!!!!

Except that CEOs don't carry guns and have the legal authority to kill you. A corrupt law enforcement apparatus is a very scary thing.

Mike,

Yes, but the CEO's carry guns of a different nature. Let us take the case of health insurance, and denial of coverage. Fraudulent foreclosures. Those things are just as deadly as the bullet fired from a gun, or a tear gas canister aimed at somebody's head.
