Sputnik — Chinese Tech Giant Huawei is Developing Smart Roads Instead of Smart Cars

The Chinese tech giant is currently testing a 4-km (2.5-mile) road in the city of Wuxi, Jiangsu province on which a self-driving bus makes stops, avoids obstacles, accelerates, and decelerates using information received from its surroundings.

Multiple sensors, cameras, and radars embedded in the road, traffic lights, and street signs help the bus to drive safely, while it in turn transmits information back to this network.

Codenamed X-Bus, the vehicle can make requests to the system, such as asking the traffics lights to turn green if it's running late.
"Autonomous driving is an irresistible trend, but any isolated vehicle alone can’t nail it. The only solution is to get more information from the roads,” said Huawei IoT Solution President Jiang Wangcheng. ...

The obvious solution is to make roads that support automated driving rather than human driving, the problem is sending Alibaba, google, huawei or whoever 50% rent charges on every one of your physical needs and then allowing them to track your every move, you know they'll soon tell you that it is too dangerous for you to leave your house without their service, you need to sign up for their service and agree to their one sided contract to exist.

Right, and this is why we need to revisit the concepts of public vs private goods, rival/non-rival and exclusive-non-exclusive, public utility, natural monopoly, and the commons.

The Lockean conception of private property as the basis of economic liberalism is enslaving us if not also killing us. It's one of the chief paradoxes of liberalism, and a lot of what is going on is in reaction to it. The problem here is that the issues are not clearly understood widely enough yet to do anything constructive about it. So we are in the impose it stage on one hand and burn it down stage on the other.
