Plant Based Science London - Bet You Didn't Know Turmeric Could Do This!

 In Bangladesh they have been colouring turmeric with lead chromate to improve its colour, so it's best to buy the fresh root, or use a reputable brand where hopefully they test it. Even some samples of organic turmeric were found to have been adulterated. They've known about this for a few years now, so hopefully the situation is improving. 


The more I research on turmeric the more I start to think is there nothing turmeric can’t do? Turmeric's ability to fight cancer and inflammation is widely known but in this video we’re going to look at a less well known benefit! Why is turmeric so powerful? What is the connection between turmeric and endothelial dysfunction? What impact does turmeric have on the body? Let's find out!

PBS earlier this had on Dr Steven Gundry as part of their fundraising drive. Now I'm a big fan of some of the PBS programs (Inspector Morse, Professor T...), but it's a shame that they have to turn to shameless grifters like Dr. (yes, he was once upon a time a legit doctor) Gundry of "lectins are the cuase of most diseases" fame. What makes him a shameless grifter a la Trump, as opposed to simply a grifter, is that not only is he selling his totally bullshit diet fad books, but he's also selling expensive (in the 1000% mark-up range) supplements as well.

Suprised Oprah, the bringer of other grifters like Dr. Phil and Dr Oz, hasn't interviewed Gundry yet.

I might put a video out about lectins, they are powerfully anti cancer as long as you don't get too much.

K, cook the legumes and the lectins miraculously go away ;) And some lectins are good for us.

That's right, Matt.

What was once known as food/diet fraud, the grifters have now termed alternative food.

Glad I only eat Trump Steaks and drink Trump Vodka... then I think if you sleep on a MyPillow it gets rid of all the bad stuff too...

Olive oil is an interesting one. It starts to go rancid within a year or so. That is why most sold in North America is, sorry to say, rancid. Funny thing is is that the rancid olive oil is a bit fruity that's why no complaints from consumers because they think sweet is good. Well not for olive oil. If you want to be sure sure it's not rancid, buy only from a
busy, frequented Greek market, buy the expensive one from Greece: and don't go cheap, you get what you pay for. Check the date for the crop year.

The investigation revealed the gang added a dye to make yellow sunflower seed oil simulate the green colour and appearance of olive oil from a base in the region of Larissa.The Hellenic Police said the organization had been active since at least the beginning of 2015 and adulterated oil was sold under different trade names in domestic and European markets. They seized almost 3,000 metal containers of 5 litres destined for export to Germany, six cars as well as a number of notes and documents. Police operation examination of samples by the Chemical Service of Central Macedonia revealed they were adulterated. An operation in Larissa, Thessaloniki, Pieria, Magnesia and Thesprotia last weekend led to the arrest of five men and two women. Police said depending on the orders they received for olive oil, the members of the organization added pigments to sunflower oil tanks to simulate olive oil. Adulterated olive oil was put in plastic or metal containers of various sizes with labels referring to areas known for production of high quality olive oil (Crete, Messinia etc) or names referring to indications such as "Extra Virgin Olive Oil".

Italy also (selected quotes):

It's reliably reported that 80% of the Italian olive oil on the market is fraudulent. Some experts think that percentage is an exaggeration. Others believe that the bigger problem is poor quality olive oil, deliberately mislabeled as virgin or extra virgin.

So unless you bought it directly from a producer or a certified distributor, the olive oil in your kitchen marked “Italian extra virgin” is very probably a fake. Either it's low quality falsely marked as virgin or extra-virgin - and not even from Italy - or it's been mixed with other oils of dubious provenance. At worst, it's not olive oil at all but a vegetable oil disguised with coloring and aroma.

But despite the efforts of the Italian government to stop what's become known as the agro mafia now controlling most of the olive oil production and marketing - as well as numerous campaigns by the region’s producers to regain their reputation and cleanse the “made in Italy” branding - a massive olive oil scandal is being uncovered in Southern Italy ( Puglia, Umbria and Campania). It involves olive oils from Syria, Turkey, Morocco and Tunisia, bottled and sold as authentic Italian extra virgin to foreign markets, particularly the United States and Japan.

That discovery came to light in a bigger undercover operation by the Italian police, dubbed “Mamma Mia,” that last week revealed another massive scam in the same region: Thousands of tons of low-quality oils from Spain and Greece also passed off as extra virgin Italian.

And that scandal followed yet another connected to an investigation of seven of the best-known Italian olive oil producers, including Bertoli, Sasso and Carapelli, allegedly selling fake olive oil as extra virgin “made in Italy.” The companies have vehemently denied the allegations.

Is that not what I said -- that most of the olive oil sold in North America is rancid? :)

My family, up until a couple of years ago (because my father now has dementia so we can't go to Greece) would buy directly the olive oil from our village's olive oil co-op and have it shipped to Montreal -- had been that way for over 50 years. Because now we can't, we have no choice but to buy some specific Greek olive oil brands that we trust that are found only in Greek supermarkets here in Montreal. One brand comes from Crete and the other from my family's region in Laconia (the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese). What distinguishes these two brands from the other so-called Greek olive oil brands is that both list the crop year of the oil and their higher price (at least 30 to 40% higher). Also, as someone who has been using olive oil all my life, these two brands taste and feel like the olive oil we used to bring from Greece. In other words, they're the real McCoy :)

As for the non-greek supermarkets, it's a lost cause finding real (let alone non-rancid) olive oil.

OK, so here are some tell-tale signs that the olive oil you're thinking of buying is most likely fake or rancid:

-- you're not in a Greek supermarket (I know it's funny, but it's true.)

-- it has an expirary date on it! (it's hilarious when you see the expiray date years away)

-- the inexpensive price.

Bonus: never buy any canned food (I guess that would be mostly sardines) that contains olive oil. The oil in this case is 100% rancid. Because, "yeah, right," they're going to put fresh, extra virgin olive oil in your tin can of sardines that is sold for 99 cents. Only buy sardines packed in water.

Btw, I am not pushing olive oil :) If you don't like it or you find it's hard to digest, or whatever, then you should not eat it. Me, I like it. I think on a daily basis I myself in total have about a cup of it... yeah, that seems about right :) I think we (me, my wife, my kid) go through a 3-liter container in about 2 weeks time. Sometimes, i even have a tablespoon of olive oil afte a meal just so i can swoosh it in my mouth for a fast cleaning of the teeth. Man, who is kidding who -- I am composed of mostly ollive oil, not water ;)
