Your son is only 21 - that makes you an 'old' dad.

I ride a bicycle in subzero temperatures. If I'm not sweating, my body won't send enough circulation to my hands and feet. Covering my face helps reduce the physiological reaction to the cold.

Exertion in cold weather takes a toll on the cardiovascular system. The lower the temperature, the less strength and endurance I have in my legs.

They are also well versed in Chemistry.

Best chemistry textbooks are written by physicists.

I have 3 sons and 1 daughter.
35
33
21
19 (daughter)

I'm 64, so I guess I'm old, but maybe not that old.

And the author of that book I talked about--Heinz Pagels--died climbing Pyramid Peak in Colorado. It's a class 4, "14er."

During the winter months here in NYC, I take evening walks of several miles just wearing T-shirt and jeans. (Hat and gloves, too.)

And I only take cold showers. Been doing that for 20 years.

Mike what about a pair of gortex ski gloves? You think those would work?

Mike,

Do you get frozen hands from your walks in NY?
Compare the two activities - temperature, duration, level of exertion.

When you have kids later in life, they call you an old dad because it's usually dads who do physical stuff with their children. My dad was 34 the year I was born. I was 35 the year he died.

Alone?

Peter,

Hands usually okay during my NYC winter walks. And I use the same gloves I used in the CO hike, but I only walk for about an hour whereas the 14er was like 5 hours, really windy and much colder with snow.

If I went cycling for 5 hours, I wouldn't be able to exert myself at a rate sufficient to maintain blood flow to the extremities. My bike run to get groceries is around 1 hour total.
