The conditions that led to the onset of a cultural revolution in the US in the Vietnam era stemmed from a post-WWII malaise arising from the prevailing Ozzie and Harriet culture and a reaction to the the prospect of living its ennui for the rest of one's life. Of course, there were many other factors involved, some similar to those now. In short, there seems to be a shift in collective consciousness underway again. Is there a trend building?

There was a shift in collective consciousness that destroyed what was left of the antiwar movement in the US. I, and the rest of the world, would be happy to see another shift to restore what was lost.
Yes, co-opted. But a lot of the countercultural — what could be monetized — remained. It's not the 40s and 50s anymore anyway.
Actually, Woodstock was the high point. It started to go downhill after that as the numbers grew and it became a fad. The spirit was exhausted by the 80s.
