U.S. 'Intelligence' Says Its 'Intelligence' Is Bullshit (here it is necessary to distinguish between intel and ops. Intel is about providing decision makers with actionable information (interpreted data) and knowledge (explanation) while operations is about creating narratives, regardless of fact. Shaping the narrative is about deception. The CIA and MI6 are not supposed to do this domestically but they now do.)

For what it's worth, while the tactics are maybe more direct now, the CIA has always propagandized the American public. A favorite technique was getting fake articles in foreign newspapers, which are then picked up by Americans ones.

Right. They used to do this. Now they are using the direct approach much more openly than in the past, where they had plausible deniability.

They should be careful, the brilliance of the American propaganda system is the media's ostensible independence and that the people on air are generally saying what they believe. As Chomsky and Herman have explained, if the presenter believed something different they wouldn't have gotten the job (sometimes people get through, but then they get fired or get their desk moved to a closet like Ashleigh Banfield had done to her). This gives the American media credibility that outright state media doesn't have. But it seems that our system is evolving towards a more overt state controlled system.
The last 5 or 6 years have seen a series of humiliations for the US media, but the last month especially, the US and western media in general, just seems so over the top that skepticism should be the default position of the general public. It's hardly surprising trust in the media has been sinking for years now.
