First they came for the non-expedient truths, & I did not speak up - because it was expedient.

Then they came for the semi-expedient truths, & I did not speak up - because it wasn't yet clear that it was expedient.

Then they came for the uncomfortable truths, & I did not speak up - because it wasn't yet that uncomfortable.

Then the inevitable delayed, distributed costs & consequences arrived, & it was too late to speak up.
