An economics, investment, trading and policy blog with a focus on Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). We seek the truth, avoid the mainstream and are virulently anti-neoliberalism.
For people who believe money or resources are limited and scarce, xenophobia toward outsiders limits competition and benefits themselves. They don't see more people as bringing more growth and prosperity but less. Sort of silly, we should let far more people come here. Having said that, the anchor baby laws promote perverse behaviour, a criminogenic culture in government bureaucracy where they officially make it illegal and dangerous to get here but then at the same time create sanctuary and enormous financial incentive to get here. I don't pretend to know how to design an immigration system but ours certainly does not seem fair to anyone.
I just saw an article claiming that 80+% of US population growth to 2050 will be from immigration. And that it will be a good thing. I'll post the ref if I run into it again.
We have an exploitative, non democratic, immigration system. Legal immigration is perfectly fine-and fully within the parameters of democracy. Illegal immigration is a travesty and it hurts our less gifted citizens (skill wise) the most.
Frankly, when it comes to America's broken immigration policy, most liberals are simply dishonest at best or calculating, ideological extremists at worst.
Malmo, read this: http://www.3spoken.co.uk/2014/10/how-labour-can-solve-immigration.html?m=1 It applies to the US too. It is about legal immigration, but illegal immigration is even worse.
