Does this mean that America will become the manufacturer for the world?
Seems far-fetched.

No, it doesn't not. Automation and robotics are the future. Much less costly and more reliable. No benefits to be concerned with. Amazon is already automating its distribution system and order fulfillment.

Americans will increasingly be forced into low paying service employment and in effect a new servant class resembling the old servant class will develop. There will be national franchises for cleaners, lawn care, etc. and these will generally employ temps depending on demand. Service workers can supplement their incomes as Uber or Lift drivers if they can afford a vehicle.

It's a race to the bottom.

Well I'm unsure what that article is talking about. Competing for customers abroad, export driven economy, etc. What you describe is within the non-tradable sector.

Well I'm unsure what that article is talking about.

US firms will export investment and sell output of foreign produced goods of US owned enterprises chiefly into emerging markets where the growth is coming from, which is what has been happening for some time. It's going to ramp up since this is were the big gains are.

Okay, got it. No point in building production facilities here if it's going to be shipped across the Pacific. Welcome to the decline, America.

Right. It's more efficient to build factories near the resources and customers, especially when cheap labor is abundant and regulation is low to non-existent. Not to mention the tax benefits.

The US will continue to manufacture the high-end highly proprietary stuff domestically but most of the other manufacturing will be leaving if it has not already. That's just capitalism.

That will be a bitter pill for Americans to swallow. They may choose another path.
