Lord Keynes — The 10,000 Year Explosion, Chapter 6: A Summary

Chapter 6 of Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending’s The 10,000 Year Explosion: How Civilization Accelerated Human Evolution(2009) is called “Expansions,” and examines the genetic effects of large-scale migrations of human beings.
History is filled with examples of certain population groups that conquer, migrate into, or spread over large areas and replace other groups, or replace other groups with some mixing.
Cochran and Harpending (2009: 156) accept that cultural and technological advantages have played a large role in the success of such movements, but also contend that sometimes, in important cases, evolutionary genetic traits have also been a factor. In this respect, as in normal evolutionary theory, we must look at group fitness, and not just individual fitness, as factors in human history (Cochran and Harpending 2009: 158).

It's a buffet. No one is forcing anyone to read anything here.

I stopped reading this blog a few weeks ago, but Magpie brought up a topic that piqued my curiosity. I shouldn't be surprised that this place was the source.

I'll do my best to see that actual "social democrats" learn about LK's blog.

Because it is not garbage. The major thesis of Chapter 6 of the book is already tacitly admitted by Jared Diamond in Guns, Germs and Steel.

A number of the other major theses of Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending have been confirmed by the best, latest research in genetics and sequencing of ancient DNA:

Chapter 2
Chapter 2 argues that humans outside of Africa have some genes from Neanderthals through interbreeding and this has changed the human genome. The revolution in sequencing of ancient genomes from bones and other remains since 2009 has vindicated Cochran and Harpending:

Chapter 3
Cochran and Harpending argued that agriculture has accelerated human evolution. There is much evidence in support of this. For instance, they argued that light skin was probably a post-10,000 BC evolutionary development from the low UV conditions in Eurasia combined with the less nutritious farming diet which lacked Vitamin D.

Turns out this is true:

http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/04/how-europeans-evolved-white-skin

Chapters 4 and 6
Cochran and Harpending argued that human farmers were subject to evolutionary changes induced by selective pressures, e.g., brought by new diseases from farming and cities.

The evidence for this was of course already conclusive even before they wrote the book! Even Jared Diamond tacitly admits it. The only difference is Diamond and others are too dishonest to admit this absolutely vindicates the main theses of both Chapters 4 and 6: that differential, regional human evolution after 10,000 BC is a major factor in human history.

It's even admitted tacitly in a documentary based on Guns, Germs, and Steel:

Chapter 6
Chapter 6 argues the general evolved ability to have lactose tolerance well into adulthood was a major biological trait of ancient Indo-Europeans (but rare amongst the people around them) and so was the evolutionary foundation of their extraordinary expansions and conquests. This has also been stunningly confirmed by modern science and sequencing of ancient DNA:

Great! Now we know that Cochran and Newton have the same track record in being right thanks to LKs splendid ability to wade through research and then draw the correct conclusions.

his latest says: "In the modern world, the Ashkenazim are significantly overrepresented in certain higher professions requiring a high IQ, such as the natural and social sciences"

and then:

"the Ashkenazim were driven into certain professions, such as being merchants, bankers and financiers for much of the Middle Ages, and in Eastern Europe also tax-farmers, toll-farmers, and estate managers and other middle-men for Christian rulers. These professions or trades require a high IQ, and especially a high verbal and mathematical IQ; "

So imo Economics is treated as a social science... and the banking system is lets face it it is run pretty f-ed up... people there all going around saying "we're out of money!" and stuff...

So you have a lot of Jews in these areas you have Greenspan, Bernanke, now Yellen, Summers, Fischer, and in banking you have a lot of Jews and it is all f-ed up...

But OTOH you have Warren who is Jewish who got on this pretty early, Mike I think might be Jewish idk if by marriage or born in there...

So you have some Jews on either side of this so I dont see where this is going... I dont see some sort of pattern or correlation between Jews and competency that is outside of some sort of normal distribution... some seem to be smart and some dumb just like everybody..

What is the point of this genetic research I dont see anything coming out of it...

Ah! Here we have the superior genes of LK giving birth to some excellent ad hominem you so often find at the extreme right.

I bet LK find scientific support for it from Gregory Cochran. Eagerly waiting for the links.

LK,

Are you asserting that the Economics and banking professions are not all f-ed up?

If you are not, then i dont see the point of saying these Jews are supposed to be all smart as they are into banking and economics, and then banking and economics are all f-ed up..

If you can see my point... seems to be a conflict in the logic or something...

Matt Franko said...

Consider it might be the training and NOT the genetics....

The fact that in many higher professions there are more high IQ people obviously does not prevent those people from believing false theories, e.g., in the Middle Ages a lot of high IQ people believed in and studied Aristotelian physics and even the Geocentric theory of the universe, but these theories were badly wrong.

Of course, true theories matter. IQ is not everything either. The fact that high IQ people can be educated to believe false theories, however, doesn't refute the existence of general intelligence as a human trait with social consequences.

Matt Franko said...

Well maybe it is the social that effects the "intelligence" or maybe better the cognitive development...

iow if within that ethnic group, if upon education was placed a higher social value, then you would expect to see more smart people come out of there... as they get more mental exercise which builds cognitive abilities... this can become a social norm within the ethnic group over all the generations...

FD: My larger view of the current situation wrt our pretty bad socio-economic problems is that we dont have the correctly TRAINED people in there... there are better TRAINED people than Alan Greenspan that we could put in there...

Not because Greenspan is Jewish, but because he was a trained musician and amateur philosopher with his Ayn Rand stuff... not a guy who was rigorously trained in system science or systems theory which is what you need in there...

LK imo this genetic stuff is a big dead end... I dont see anything coming out of this historic conjecture... we need to best be looking AHEAD not looking backwards... we dont have an eye in the back of our heads for an evolutionary reason or otherwise...

Matt Franko said...

Look this a training tool I have lately been playing around with:

https://www.interactivemetronome.com/

It uses timing exercises to train and they TEST before and after and there is cognitive improvement and better IQ and standardized test results..

What if the Jews were socially into playing music and used formal music teaching methods which include timing on their children? then those kids developed more than those who didnt play music... so the test results turned out higher...

Look I for one sure dont believe we were all "created equal" but everyone can improve with training... those that train will end up scoring higher than those that dont...

You have to look at the training...

(this is getting like the Eddie Murphy movie "Trading Places"....)

II would not say "rotten" but rather non-standard. Foreigners often have trouble with local dishes because they are not familiar with them and view them "rotten." Actually some of the them do smell rotten.

I put up stuff that is controversial that I find interesting if only because it challenges the consensus reality and received wisdom. Unless I say so, I don't necessarily agree with it but think it is a POV that needs to be considered.

The comments section is generates quite a bit of interesting debate and I learn things all the time through it. I don't reject tings brought up that don't find my POV but rather check out their support.

This is what inquiry is about in a liberal society and it is one of the strong points of liberalism and why it is important to the development of knowledge.

The paradox, of course, is that it airs a lot of what many consider to be either nonsense, propaganda, charlatanism, etc., some of which some people find offensive.

Tom Hickey said...

The way that knowledge develops is through inquiry. Inquiry involves posing possible explanations and rejecting those that are found less optimal than others.

Inquiry is not about "truth," for there is no way of knowing what is actually "true" in the larger scheme of things. For lack of criteria that are not time-based.

The best that humans can do is arrive at the best explanation based on current methods and data.

Knowledge acquisition is a historical project and therefore it is dynamic and time-bound.

Eternal truth is an ideal at which human aim but cannot reach owing to their limitations — unless one accepts the claim of perennial wisdom of that knowledge is structured in consciousness and there are different levels of awareness beyond the ordinary as the world's mystics have reported. Of course, those claims are themselves controversial.

Tom Hickey said...

There are fundamental questions under debate for millennia regarding this.

The first is what is innate and what is acquired. Now we talk of this in terms of generic or biological evolution v. cultural evolution, with group evolution being at the center of the controversy.

The second is the influence of the individual v. the social. Methodological individualists assume that everything is reducible to individuals, while others with different assumptions hold that there is group and social influence, including cultural.

Neither of these issues is decided definitively based on incontroverible evidence.

In theory, there is a place for this sort of work if politics are removed from it. Anthropologists and social scientists can debate controversial theories, and the results can be published for the purposes of academic review.

In practice, this is impossible. Anything that has political implications will be hijacked. In this case, the author has made his politics clear, and you are running a political blog.
