Modern Economics Versus Islamic Economics — Asad Zaman

Stuart Birks publishes WEA Commentaries. This is a project of the World Economic Association, which is the World’s largest organization of heterodox economists, who aim to challenge the dominant, mainstream, orthodoxy in economics. In the latest issue of the commentaries, Stuart has published extracts from my article on “Islam’s Gift: An Economy of Spiritual Development“. Initial segment of these extracts is as follows:
An Islamic WorldView
Modern Economics Versus Islamic Economics
Asad Zaman | Vice Chancellor, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics and former Director General, International Institute of Islamic Economics, International Islamic University Islamabad

That “Islamic WorldView” article says “European views give primacy to the material dimensions, while Islamic views give primacy to the spiritual dimensions of human existence.” Really?

Perhaps unbeknown to the author of the article, there has actually been a movement in Europe followed by hundreds of millions of people over the last two thousand years or so: it’s called “Christianity”.

Plus I don’t see what wife beating (explained and advocated on dozens of videos by Imams) has to do with anything “spiritual”. Same goes for female genital mutilation, killing cartoonists and authors, demolishing the World Trade Centre, etc etc.

The difference between Europe and the Islamic world on the “spiritual / material” scale is perhaps a bit less than the article claims.

Asad Zaman’s economics has NOTHING whatsoever to do with Islam or Spiritualism but is plain MMT, see
