Reuters - Organised 'overkill': China shows off rapid lockdown system after latest outbreak

No expense is spared in China, but the money is well spent as the economy is getting back on steam.

Days after a 17-year-old girl tested positive for COVID-19 in a remote part of western China last week, health authorities said they had tested over 4.7 million people in the region.

China's strict formula of immediate lockdowns and mass testing even at the first signs of infection has been vital to its success in controlling the disease, allowing its economy to quickly recover from the crisis, officials say.

The highly orchestrated strategy - described as "overkill" even by its own proponents - is unique among major economies at a time when Europe and the United States are facing a massive surge of new cases and often chaotic policies..

They care about the old folk and the vulnerable, in the West a significant amount of people think it's best to let them go, even if it's an agonising death.

My parents next door neighbour had his 80-something father put in an old folks home when his father was no longer able to wipe his own ass.

Sorry for the abrasive language but it's the exact words he used to explain to me why he put his father in a home: "When he couldn't wipe his own ass, that was it for me."

I've been taking care of my soon-to-be 92-yr-old father (diagnosed with dementia 3 yrs ago) full time these last three years (by "full time" I mean that I spend about 14 hours a day at my parents' home). Not passing judgment on the Frenchman, all of us have different limits I guess...

Assisted suicide should be available. We live in a death-denying culture, where people don't even consider their quality of life, until its too late.

I admire the Italians and the Spanish who have closer families and old folk who live at home with them.
