Sputnik International — Putin Communicates at Meetings With Leaders of States Through Interpreters

Russian President Vladimir Putin communicates with leaders of other countries through interpreters at official meetings, but he most frequently speaks English during "on-the-feet" conversations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday.
This question came up here some time ago. President Putin is also fluent in German.

Maybe these things are so important that he doesn't want to get a word wrong. If his English is very good but not 100% perfect one word wrong could make all the difference. It would nice to hear him speak in English, though. He's not bellicose and loudmouthed like Western politicians.

No, it is a nationalist thing. Putin is fluent in German and Merkel is fluent in Russian, but when Merkel and Putin talk officially they use their national languages. I don't know whether they bring interpreters with them.
