Pinker's books on language and the mind are wonderful books. His last book on violence was appalling. As soon as he ventures away from language and the mind, he becomes a reactionary and abysmally shallow thinker. I won't buy it, but will certainly read it when it appears in my local library. My prediction is that it will be another silly book about enlightenment values in the Sam Harris mould, a mould made out of plasticine by a child who can just about say "poo poo", and how we must spread peace by murdering everyone.
I usually find Bill Gates's recommendations damn awful. Gates said Pinker's book on violence was the best book he'd ever read or something like it. So I don't expect much.
Any endorsement by Gates (third world vaccine sterilization, monopolist patent thief, holier-than-thou preacher) is reason to run in the opposite direction.
