President Obama should make the most of Attorney General Eric Holder's policy shift this week to roll back the war on drugs and get behind full repeal of prohibition on marijuana. Then the president should exercise a judicious use of his presidential power and grant pardons to the many tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands???) who are rotting in prisons for non-violent marijuana possession.
Regarding the potential for medicinal use of marijuana, anecdotal research on THC & CBD, the active chemical compounds in cannabis is emerging. For example, cannabidiol (CBD) is believed to have meaningful analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties without the psychoactive effects from THC. Even more important though is the cancer fighting abilities of CBD. To the extent this is true, it could be one of the biggest stories of our time.
