Jonathan Larson — Russia defends Christianity

Most Westerners don't realize that the many Christians of the East are Aramaic-speaking, the same language spoken by Jesus millennia ago.

Modern Christians tend to think of "the Holy Land" as Israel, but Antioch was the center of the Church after the destruction of Jerusalem and the Diaspora.

"..,it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called 'Christians'.” Acts 11:26 (NRSV)

The five widely recognized apostolic sees are Jerusalem, Rome, Antioch, Constantinople, and Alexandria.

There are still communities of Christians in the Middle East, both Latin and Orthodox.

Tom this is where I have to question Russia's PR abilities...

Putin had the interview with Charlie Rose it would have been a good time to bring these issues up (from the Russian side of things...)

Unless this guy Larson is projecting this policy himself and its really not a Russian policy but just perhaps can be interpreted this way as a result...

Putin has stated it explicitly as part of Russian policy in Syria. This has been Assad's policy as well. The secular Syrian regime has supported the different faiths in Syria. The Islamists are the problem and if the regime is replaced by an Islamists one, as the US and its allies want, that's the end of Christians of all sects in Syria.

The US and its allies are out to lunch on this, and while Orthodox leaders are making a lot of noise about it, Catholic and Protestant leaders of the West are not.
