It was German business that prevailed on Merkel to stand up to US pressure. Their competitiveness would have been undermined by more expensive energy.
Germany sensed that this was an effort to weaken not only Russia but itself as the economic powerhouse of Europe. Remember that a major reason for the creation of the EU and EZ was to establish Europe as the equal of the US. The US was and is having none of that. It wants vassals of the empire, not another peer competitor.

Trumps only problem was with the hypocrisy… Russia is supposed to be some big military threat to NATO meanwhile you are doing big business deals with them for critical resources…
So if Trump were still in there now he would just pull US funding of NATO operations in Germany and move on… let those two lovebirds have their honeymoon…
