Joaquin Flores — Psychology of the Balkans War over Pipelines: Greece, Bulgaria and Beyond

Overview

The present war in Ukraine and events in Transnistria are already serious indications that the Balkans and West Black Sea regions are correctly forecasted to be theatres of instability in the coming period. Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Serbia are critical pieces.

Indisputably, the conflict in Ukraine greatly involves the future of Eurasian natural gas pipeline projects. These cannot be considered geopolitically distinct from Russia-Turkey bilateral relations nor from the pipeline 'cold war' presently taking place in the Balkans. As a general rule, it the Ukraine war demonstrates that between the major power blocs, outright war is indeed 'an option'.
In analyzing the events, the debate primarily surrounds the viability and status of Turkish Stream/South Stream on the one hand, and 'TANAP/TAP' backed by the Atlanticist network.…

David F. Ruccio — “Moving with the times”?

This report accords with want some Bulgarian friends now living in the US tell me. They also report that they have close friends in Bulgaria trying to out — "away from the Mafia" is the way they put it.

Not that they are enchanted with all aspects of American capitalism either. Having grown up in a socialist country, they are amazed and appalled at how a rich country like the US can be so unequal, with those at the bottom being marginalized from society and those at the top living in another world, like the Communist leadership did.

John Henley — Romania and Bulgaria: 'If people go to Britain, of course it's to contribute'

… a nervous coalition government has rushed out measures making new arrivals wait longer before they can claim benefits – and, more controversially, is calling for a wider debate on the principle of free movement within the European Union and perhaps even an EU migration cap.
Of course, immigration of labor is what is supposed to happen to make the euro work. Now that it is happening, political resistance is rising to immigration that will force wages in that country down. But employers will be happy with being able to offer lower wages and salaries.

This is political issue especially in Britain since, while a member of the EU, the UK is not a member of the EZ.

And, of course, emigration will further hurt the "contributing" countries since they will lose highly qualified workers to higher paying nations through this "brain drain."

But everyone knew this when they signed up for the EU and EZ, right?

gjohnsit — The pitchforks are coming out in Europe

When you think of governments ready to fall in Europe, you probably think of Greece or Spain. Instead it is Italy that is warning of a violent insurrection.
Events in Italy are turning serious. President Giorgio Napolitano has warned of “widespread social tension and unrest” in 2014 as the Long Slump drags on.
Those living on the margins are being drawn into “indiscriminate and violent protest, a sterile lurch towards total opposition”
The protest movement in Italy is literally called the Pitchfork Movement (Movimento dei forconi). Their demands are no less than the overthrow of the government.

It's not wrong to call it a crime against humanity.

Anti government protest, Sofia Bulgaria 14.06.2013

From a friend on FB:
Big protest down the street near where I'm staying in [Sophia] Bulgaria. People are protesting the endless corruption on all levels of society. Reminds me of when I took to the streets to try and end the Vietnam War in America. Very exciting time. Even now, I can hear the passionate chanting of huge crowds not far away. It's time for a change here and the people are empowering themselves at last!
