Jon Rappaport — One takeaway from Trump’s inauguration speech: gangs

I could list 10 interesting things Trump said yesterday. And of course, words aren’t actions. Yet. But here is one remark you’re not going to get, and never did get, from any recent president:
Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities…And the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential. This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.”
To which Rachel Maddow (MSNBC) replied:
“It was militant and it was dark. The crime, the gangs, the drugs, this ‘American carnage,’ disrepair, decay. You can’t imagine the outgoing president giving a speech like that.”
She’s right, because the outgoing president never did anything to stop the carnage. If she thinks Trump’s language was too militant, she should try talking to mothers who live in those inner cities, who are trapped and held hostage by gangs, who want a nation of laws, and can’t find a way to live safely with their children by eating Obamas’s high-flying empty rhetoric.
Obama somehow managed to spend eight years in the White House and never mention, with any significance, GANGS. Eight years…and nothing. Yet he was The One who was going rescue America’s inner cities.
Find an inauguration speech by any recent president in which the word GANGS appears.
Is the whole point of being presidential an avoidance of stark realities? Is that what all the Rachel Maddows want? They’re not living in those neighborhoods. They’re not up against the gangs and the crime and drugs every day and every night.
The truth is, it’s offensive for a president not to mention these things....

Needs to be issue #1 for immigration.

These central american gangs are brutal not a week goes by we don't get reports of death. They are on par with ISIS. I don't understand why it can't be fixed.

Why are people walking through deserts escorted by murderous thugs who leave trails of corpses when people could get visas, have background checks, and use ports of entry to take buses, trains and planes safely. It's the 21st century?

I think out-of-sight out-of-mind maybe.

This is what Trump/Bannon* appear to be saying. The establishment, living in the bubble, has ignored it.

*Steve Bannon reputedly either wrote the inaugural speech or contributed heavily to it.

Are Americans willing to take to the streets to get these changes done?

Tom, portions of the speech were plagiarised from -- and I am not kidding -- from the sci-fi movie Avatar. How pathetic is that? The only question is who did the plagiarising -- Banner or that other guy Trump?

Gang killings don't happen in the rarified air and gated communities of the 1%, so for practical purposes they don't happen at all.

If they did things would be be very different. Remember the congresswoman who got shot? I'm surprised we aren't footing the bill for 535 private personal security details.

Batman, Avatar -- I'm sure there are other movie quotes in that speech ;)

Did I say "Banner" instead of "Bannon"? By bigly I did! In my own defence, I was probably subconsciously thinking of Richard Spencer at the same time because, you know, Bannon + Spencer = a Banner. Either that or, damn it, early signs of dementia :(

PS: Saw the other day on twitter: "If Trump gets dementia, how will we know?"

Truth be told, it was an unusual speech. It was as if Trump wrote it himself an hour before giving it, completely exhausted after a sleepless night of debauchery and/or watching Batman. At least, I hope that's the reason. Obviously no speechwriter could have been that crude, and certainly not with weeks of preparation, unless his speechwriters are Bo Gritz and Charles Manson. Perhaps Trump thinks of himself as a billionaire playboy turned caped crusader like Batman? Fatman? CheetoMan? FakeUniversityFraudsterMan? IncestMan? The mind reels!
