The US has been actively at work (clandestinely) in Central Asia to undermine OBOR. It's also what the Ukrainian fiasco is at least partially about, as well as the South China Sea kerfuffle with China.
Washington knows that if China and Russia pull this off, US global hegemony is at an end, and there are several factions in DC (neocons and liberal interventionists) that won't accept this lying down.
Pepe Escobar says that Putin tried to tie Russia closer to Europe but the EU ignored him. Although a lot of Russia in in the East, it is still predominantly a European country, says Pepe Escobar. It's a shame we didn't take the offer, but perhaps we have a second chance with the Eurasia project. Let's hope we take it.
