How did China manage to end absolute poverty

Hawks vs the Doves

The Western way to wealth : imperialism, wars of acquisition, piracy. A zero sum game.

China’s way to weath: invest to grow the economy: invest in infrastructure and the people (education) - a plan for all poor countries. People create wealth. A wealthy Africa means more customers. Win, win. Invest in protecting the environment - the long term returns will be good.

You have great universities, Matt. Problem is there aren't enough qualified American high school students to fill them up.

Yes, I have no problem my kid going to John Hopkins University. Then again, I neither have a problem if she went here to McGill University, a medical teaching hospital.

You have no problem paying her tuition?

Neither does the government of China.

As for the poor, they got all sorts of big huge trouble.

Tuition where? McGill?

When it comes to science, PP, US students unfortunately don't fare very well.

McGill ain't free. Nothing compared to US levels of tuition, but still a hefty chunk of change, or debt.

Why the obsession with higher education?
Eliminating poverty has to do with basic education. Even a high tech economy doesn't need as many engineers as it does retail workers.

And if you're a believer in "free markets", the responsibility for developing a skilled labour force rests with private business.

Well, where does one go to become a medical doctor but in university :)

Most people don't become doctors, or professionals. There would be relatively little poverty alleviation if that were the strategy. Yet that is what is obsessed about in the west.

I suppose it's too much to expect from an affluent western audience.

LOL it’s a US soft power initiative...

And btw I’d like to see if this happened under a US kid’s watch:

Matt, you're living quite long in the past on China. Whether or not a few people from China go to school here makes no difference. Did Rhodes scholarships like Bill Clinton's - make the US a puppet of the UK, make US universities nonexistent or inferior? China needs nothing from us any more, really. Except for providing examples on what not to do. :-)

Education is not the central part of poverty elimination. Except perhaps for educating elites to be less predatory and to learn common sense they should absorbed in kindergarten. The central thing in ending poverty is deciding to end poverty. The US did it, especially during the New Deal, especially in the US South. China's approach is similar to FDR's. Which is just common sense. If people are out of work, give them jobs. Doing good stuff. Build things like the TVA. Disease is bad. So eliminate diseases like malaria. etc

LOL many people here I’m sure would answer yes...

The goal of soft power initiatives is not to make the other nation “a puppet”... it’s like an indirect form of propaganda... fosters a more cooperative relationship.. in contrast with the alternative form of national power...

Title 50 USC vs Title 10 USC....

Every one of these turd world foreign fcks appying to go to school here has to provide a DNA sample to just APPLY to come here for school... yo!

International students are a cash cow. US universities would pack 100% of their classes with foreigners if they were allowed to.

Economics.
