Extra-virgin olive oil and the gut-brain axis: influence on gut microbiota, mucosal immunity, and cardiometabolic and cognitive health

Some people who recommend plant based diets say to avoid all extracted oils, and the science they present looks good, but the science for the benefits of adding some olive oil to your diet looks good too. I have trouble finding food satisfying, or filling, without some olive oil in it.

New research -

Abstract

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), a popular functional food and major source of fat in the Mediterranean diet, pos sesses a variety of healthful components, including monounsaturated fatty acids and bioactive phenolic compounds that, individually and collectively, exert beneficial effects on cardiometabolic markers of health and act as neuroprotective agents through their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The gut microbiota and health of the intestinal environment are now considered important factors in the development of obesity, metabolic disease, and even certain neurodegenerative conditions via the gut-brain axis. Recently, data are emerging which demonstrate that the health-promoting benefits of EVOO may also extend to the gut microbiota. In this review, we aimed to examine findings from recent studies regarding the impact of EVOO on gut microbiota and intestinal health and explore how modulations in composition of gut microbiota, production of microbially produced products, and activity and functioning of the mucosal immune system may lead to favorable outcomes in cardiovascular, metabolic, and cognitive health.

Extra-virgin olive oil and the gut-brain axis: influence on gut microbiota, mucosal immunity, and cardiometabolic and cognitive health

All oils, including whole nuts, apparently damage your arteries, but not if you add vegetables, fruits, or foods that have high amount of antioxidants.

Say No to Olive Oil?

Combine wOil With Antioxidants to Be Safe

Vogel's own research, in fact, has shown that when olive oil is combined with foods rich in antioxidants, such as vegetables, the vessel-constricting effect disappears. All you have to do is combine olive oil with red wine vinegar, which is loaded with the same antioxidants found in wine, and it appears you can prevent the deleterious effect on blood vessels.

Say No to Olive Oil

70% of olive oil sold in supermarkets is fake, so its best to buy it from a single estate. I buy Geeek olive oil direct from the manufacturer on Amazon. It tastes wonderful!

Kaivey,

Can you give me the name of that olive oil company you buy from?

I've tried two, both are nice. I don't know which one I prefer. The second one to start with, but I'm beginning to like the fruitiness of the second. But both are great! Check out the reviews on Amazon.

This guy recommends a Costco oil. I think he's genuine.

You always look for the Greek olive oil brands that list the CROP YEAR; that is, when the olives were harvested. NEVER the EXPIRATION DATE. Olives are harvested in the fall (earliest September) ,so in a few months they should reach the North American markets.

I've personally visited the olive co-ops in southern Greece (in northern Greece it's cotton and apples, folks) and I've asked: How long does the olive oil last? If packaged (that's the wrong word but i just can't think of it right now) properly and along with proper storage, it should last about a year. Maximum, and we're pushing it here, 2 years. In time, olive oil loses a lot of its benefits like the polyphenols, but as long as it's edible it's still good. You want to avoid it when it's rancid. And this is where it's tricky, it's hard to tell when it's rancid. Yeah, you'll need a chemistry lab for that. That's why most olive oils sold in North America are rancid -- no one is the wiser.

Listen, when people ask me which brand to buy I keep it simple, because going thru the Greek brands with their Greek names is just too hard for someone who is not Greek to understand: Buy the Costco brand -- Kirkland Extra Virgin Olive Oil and you're good to go. These guys don't fuck around with their name brand, and no producer is is going to fuck with them.

Also: Gov. Cuomo is history, and I think he might have gotten his brother Chris over at CNN fired for involving him in his own stupid, stupid, damn, shameful mess. Idiot has a pretty wife and family and goes after the hired help!

Anyone here ever have homemade sauerkraut (not the store-bought)? I have -- I made it myself :) Delicious. You just need patience because it takes about two weeks for the fermentation process. I mention it because it's loaded with probiotics, unlike the store-bought ones. If you make it, use if you can kosher salt. And get this: when I serve it i add olive oil to eat, so in effect it's Greek sauerkraut ;)

btw, your gut micro-what-ever-you-call-it is developed when you're young. That's why it's important for kids to go outside and get "dirty."

We were allowed out to play in London without being accompanied by adults at age 5. In London we played on the bomb sites. I think I wrote about it here before. All the children were allowed out. Great fun!

I say no to bland tasting oils. Apple cider vinegar, anyone?
