I decided to get my 100 year old French doors made more secure. I have an Edwardian house and they have a square bay, whereas a Victorian house has a bay with sloping sides, half an hexagon.
I found a company that refurbishes old windows and doors as many people want to preserve the look of their period houses or buildings. This company can even build brand new replicas of your old windows for maximum security and heat retention if you want
The salesman came from the other side of London and quoted £850 for the job with secondary glazing. I said brilliant, but then he said there was a £450 surcharge as I was a long way from their depot and they will only be able to do one job that day because of the travelling. I still felt £1300 was worth it, especially as my neighbours had just been broken into through their French doors. Okay, said the salesman, but when I got the quote 20% vat was added as well, and now it became too dear, so I tried to renegotiate, but it went nowhere.
I didn't get the refurbished Frech doors, the company never got the job, and the government never the 10% vat that I would have probably paid.

They will, on whatever else you spent the money on instead. And if you don't spend it, then that acts like tax economically anyway.
Standard MMT - government has no need of your tax. What they need is for everybody to spend less of the increased income they are receiving because of prior government spending so there remains the right sort of unemployed people government can hire for the public good.
I made my French doors very secure myself, and no one will be able to get passed them, unless they shatter the glass.
I looked into glass options, and some are near shatter proof, but these types break without making a lot of noise. I eventually found a very honest security company that said that unless your are going to go for the best, most secure, double glazing, then standard plate glass was the best. It makes a lot of noise when you break it, and it leaves jagged edges which thieves can cut themselves on leaving DNA.
"Well I assumed the door company would want to get paid…"
They'll get paid by somebody else prepared to pay the rate. There is a 13-14 week delay on getting doors at the moment due to a 'shortage of materials'.
I have a brand new house. I've been waiting for a replacement door since last October.

Yes, you're right, I would have spent it in something else. Probably Hi-fi, knowing me!

Just get a gun and put NRA stickers on the doors…
“ They will, on whatever else you spent the money on instead.”
How does a door company get Kevin's munnie he spends on audio?
Parse the sentence again. 'They' refers to 'the government'.
Thieves spend their ill gotten gains into the economy. That's a good thing, no?

Down the pub.

I prefer patio doors over French doors, myself :)
