Jeffrey D. Sachs — The War on Huawei

The Trump administration's conflict with China has little to do with US external imbalances, closed Chinese markets, or even China’s alleged theft of intellectual property. It has everything to do with containing China by limiting its access to foreign markets, advanced technologies, global banking services, and perhaps even US universities.…
The Trump administration, not Huawei or China, is today’s greatest threat to the international rule of law, and therefore to global peace.
Containing China (and Russia) to mantain and extend US global hegemony.

Chinese experts have said that Beijing was trying to separate Meng's arrest from the trade negotiations, but also warned that public anger in China over Canada's move could compel officials there to take measures that would further sour U.S.-China ties and endanger talks.…
This is the most significant item in the report. The Chinese are very nationalistic and conservative, and they are extremely sensitive to humiliation. The Chinese government also has its ears to the ground regarding the public mood.

Canadian ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig detained in China

This is clever on the part of China. If they start grabbing Americans in China, then the USA might not seek to free them, being too prideful to ask China for their release. By grabbing a Canadian, the Chinese put Canadian pressure on Washington.

--OFF TOPIC --

Fireworks in White House today as Trump argued with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer about extending the US-Mexico border wall. Trump needs 10 Democrat votes in the senate to get funding, which he does not have. Trump thinks he can get the House to go along with him. Pelosi says the House will not go along with him. Trump says that if he doesn’t get funding for the wall, he will shut down the U.S. government next week.

During a “shut down,” agencies and employees receive delayed payments, while members of the military, the Department of Defense, and Members of Congress remain on the payroll.

After the meeting, Pelosi went #MeToo: “It’s like a manhood thing for him. As if manhood could ever be associated with him. This wall thing. It goes to show you: You get into a tickle contest with a skunk, you get tinkle all over you.”

Schumer says it is childish for Trump to threaten to “shut down the government,” even though Schumer himself made the same threat in March 2017.

During the argument, Schumer says a border wall is wasteful and ineffective.

Schumer also says, “When the President brags that he won North Dakota and Indiana, he’s in real trouble.”

In reality, Trump won North Dakota and Indiana in Nov 2016

Republicans won North Dakota and Indiana in both the House and Senate in Nov 2018
