Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists — The Doomsday Clock — 2019 Doomsday Clock Announcement

Humanity now faces two simultaneous existential threats, either of which would be cause for extreme concern and immediate attention. These major threats—nuclear weapons and climate change—were exacerbated this past year by the increased use of information warfare to undermine democracy around the world, amplifying risk from these and other threats and putting the future of civilization in extraordinary danger.
There is nothing normal about the complex and frightening reality just described....

We could have happiness, better drugs and health care, better science, a world that is not getting over populated, and a world of peace. And there's plenty of money to made out of this, but war easier and very profitable for the elites.

In his 1979 book Broca’s Brain, astrophysicist Carl Sagan suggested that, in terms of evolution, the human brain had grown very large is a remarkably short time. The earliest fossils of anatomically modern humans are from the Middle Paleolithic, about 200,000 years ago. Whales likewise have big brains, but whales have been around for 50 million years, which is 250 times longer than humans have been. Before that, whales were land animals. Their transition from land to water took about 10 million years, which is 50 times longer than homo sapiens has been around.

Sagan’s point is that we have developed such large brains in such a short time that we are a very unstable species, given to madness, and liable at any time to render ourselves extinct.

Every single day, 365 days a year, the instant we log on to the Internet we see examples of insanity. If we annihilate ourselves, it will be no loss to the planet.
